Child Care
Child care is not an exact science - you only have to look at the large numbers of child care books out there and the various methods of bringing up children to realise that. The truth is that most parents learn childcare as they go along - they may read books but are more likely to adapt their own ways of bringing up their children. But, there are some points that you should try to follow. For example:
- It is your responsibility to encourage your child to be fit and healthy. Get them used to a healthy diet and make sure they get plenty of exercise and fresh air.
- Help them learn the skills they need in life. This isn't about educational achievement - it's a gradual process that helps them feel secure and that helps them have a good self-image. As they get older foster independence but make sure that they understand how to keep themselves out of harm's way. Encourage them to talk to you about their feelings - this will help them develop emotionally. Remember, listening is more important than talking sometimes.
- You need to keep children (especially younger children) safe at home. From a young age you should child-proof your home so that they cannot hurt themselves or cause accidents. As they get older teach them what to do and not to do to stay safe in a domestic environment.
- Make sure that they get all their immunisations/boosters and that they have regular check-ups when young as appropriate. As they get older don't be afraid to take them to the doctor if they get ill.
- Don't try and push them to achieve academically or developmentally. Kids respond well to help and fun activities but will switch off or stress out if you put them under pressure. Remember that all children develop at different rates so don't expect them to hit every milestone target on time, every time and don't compare them to their friends!
- Try to spend time with your child/children regularly. This isn't all about fun days out and treats - it can as simple as sitting down with them when they have their tea and chatting about their day. Make them feel that they are important to you by giving them time.
- Impose fair and consistent discipline about their behaviour both within and outside the home. Teach them respect for others.
- Let them have fun! Kids learn a LOT from play (often without knowing it!).
